Conditions Report -- September 16, 2009

NORTHWEST:

--Forecast for the West Slope of the Cascades.

--Due to the warm temperatures seen in the Cascades this summer the snow which typically covers our countless glaciers has melted, exposing the glacial ice below. To read more about the hazards this presents, particularly on Mt. Rainier click here.

--In a related report, there is about eight inches of snow on ice on the Hogsback Headwall above the Hogsback camp on the north side of Mount Baker. Both the Easton and the Coleman-Deming routes have many exposed crevasses that require belays t
o cross. Most parties are traversing far to the right above the Hogsback Camp on the North Side of the mountain to access the Football Field and the Black Buttes Camp.

--The Glacier Creek Road, which provides access to the north side of Mount Baker has opened. There are some stipulations on travel. To read about them, click here.

--Over the weekend a lot of parties got out in the nice weather. This party climbed the Disappointment Cleaver on Mount Rainier. This party sent the aid climb Green Drag-On. And this party climbed the Exfoliation Dome in Darrington.

SIERRA:

--Though there's the occasional thunderstorm, the weather in the Eastern Sierra has been very good. This party recently climbed the West Ridge of Mount Conness and this party just climbed the North Buttress of Mount Goode.

RED ROCK CANYON:

--The American Alpine Institute's Red Rock season will officially start on September 21st. Please call our office for up-to-date information.

--The late exit and overnight permit number for Red Rock Canyon is 702-515-5050. If there is any chance that you will be inside the park after closing, be sure to call this number so that you don't get a ticket.

--The scenic drive currently opens its gates at 6 in the morning.
