Conditions Report -- April 16, 2008

Red Rock Canyon:
  • Temperatures are currently in the 80s in the sun and in the 60s in the shade.
  • The Red Rock Scenic Drive is now open from 6 in the morning until 8 in the evening.
  • If you are doing a long route and don’t think that you’ll be back to the car by 8, then be sure to call 702-515-5050 to obtain a late exit permit.
  • A new parking lot is currently under construction at the start of the Black Velvet Road. If you wish to climb in Black Velvet Canyon you will need to access it via an alternative route.

Cascades:

Eastern Sierra:

  • Though it’s not the biggest snow year in the Sierra, it is a relatively big year based on averages. Look carefully at the Owens River Basin. This is where many of the AAI climbing objectives are. These early reports bode well for later season conditions on snow and ice routes like U-Notch, V-Notch and North Peak.
  • Reports indicate that spring skiing is in full swing in the Eastern Sierra. Perfect corn was found this week on most aspects. Keep an eye on avalanche conditions while skiing. Current avalanche conditions reports may be found here.
  • The Onion Valley Road recently re-opened to the top.

Alaska:

South America:

  • There are a series of new rules for Americans entering Bolivia. This may look like a big deal, but it’s really not. AAI climbers who register for Bolivia trips will receive a full briefing in their registration packet. See the section entitled Entry/Exit Requirements on the State Department website.
